This protein functions as a deubiquitinating enzyme that regulates autophagy, antiviral responses, and membrane protein stability by removing ubiquitin modifications from target proteins. Mutations cause autosomal recessive developmental and epileptic encephalopathy with onset in infancy, characterized by severe intellectual disability, refractory seizures, and progressive microcephaly. The gene is highly constrained against loss-of-function variants, indicating that complete loss of protein function is likely not tolerated.
