The protein functions as a ubiquitin ligase and cochaperone, ubiquitinating targets including heat shock cognate protein 71 kDa (Hspa8) and DNA polymerase beta. Mutations cause spinocerebellar ataxia, autosomal recessive 16, which primarily affects the cerebellum and motor coordination. This condition follows an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern.
