This gene encodes the pro-alpha1 chains of type III collagen, a fibrillar collagen found in extensible connective tissues including skin, lung, intestine and the vascular system. Mutations cause polymicrogyria with or without vascular-type Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, affecting both brain development and connective tissue integrity. The condition follows autosomal recessive inheritance.
