The protein is a subunit of AMPA-sensitive glutamate receptors that form ligand-gated ion channels mediating excitatory neurotransmission in the brain. Mutations cause a neurodevelopmental disorder with variable presentation including intellectual disability, seizures, and gait abnormalities. The condition follows autosomal dominant inheritance.
