The LCN2 protein regulates cellular iron trafficking by binding iron through association with siderophores and either delivering iron to cells or removing it depending on the iron-bound state, and also functions in innate immunity by sequestering iron from bacterial siderophores. Mutations cause autosomal recessive intellectual developmental disorder with behavioral abnormalities and craniofacial dysmorphism. This gene shows no constraint against loss-of-function variants in the general population.
