The protein is a molecular chaperone subunit of the TCP1 ring complex (TRiC) that folds various proteins including actin and tubulin in an ATP-dependent manner within its central cavity. Mutations cause intellectual developmental disorder with polymicrogyria and seizures, affecting both brain development and neurological function. Inheritance is autosomal dominant.
