This gene encodes a GABA-A receptor subunit that forms ligand-gated chloride channels mediating inhibitory neurotransmission in the brain. Mutations cause autosomal dominant generalized epilepsy with febrile seizures plus (GEFS+) and familial febrile seizures, with seizures typically beginning in childhood and often triggered by fever.
